Day one produced an awesome display from England and a dismal effort by home side Portugal, who must have been favourites along with neighbours Spain. Both finished down the pack in 23rd and 14th place respectively. At this stage it looks inconceivable that England will not take some sort of medal and highly likely that it will be Gold... but stranger things have happened in the angling world... tomorrow will see 4x World Champ Alan Scotthorne take over from Des Shipp, who was England's lowest scorer on 5pts.... who would have put money on that scenario? Now thats what a manager would call luxury!

There are some notable anglers heading on a Gold medal course.... Sorti, Raison, Gardner, Walter, Masson (yes Jamie 'Mr Commercial' Masson), VD Hoogen and Ashby... or will it be an unknown from Serbia, San Marino or Sweden....

SUNDAY - PORTUGAL 2006... 16.06 GMT

Official: Hungarian Tamas Walter made up for this years disappointing European Championships when he secured his second World individual gold medal. Tamas scored the perfect two points in Belgium in 2004 but had to work hard this year to overcome a strong challenge from San Marino's Ivan Biordi. England's Sean Ashby justified both managers faith in him by securing an individual bronze medal, his first at world level.
Italy made up for a miserable day one to take the day's honours, but they still couldn't peg back England's day one advantage. England had firmly set their sights on keeping that GOLDEN place, and found their 50pts advantage good enough on day two, even though it did dwindle somewhat!
Italy did however manage to take the silver from Hungary, who cemented their dominance in the world rankings with the bronze position.
Official scorecards will be posted when they arrive.
